Turtles symbolize the earth and water, and appear frequently in historic art from Central America, including the Coclé culture in Panama. The people of ancient Coclé were highly skilled craftspeople and metalworkers, known for their gold pieces and intricate painted ceramics. 

Their goldsmiths were masters of the lost-wax casting process. Turtles were used in creation stories regarding the origin of the Earth, and symbolize good health and longevity because of their long lives. Turtles and other amulets were often worn as protection against hostile forces or made as offerings to appease their gods.
